It didn't come as much of a surprise to me that Early Wynn was a tough card to pick up at less than a back breaking price. A Hall of Famer who won 300 games, Wynn figured to demand a premium. While it's certainly cool to own this card, it's not my favorite one in the set. The lime green is somewhat interesting in the background, but Topps didn't do Wynn any favors with this "photo" selection. The small smudge of paper-loss on the back may have scared other potential buyers off, but doesn't bother me a bit.
Wynn was known for not being shy about dusting batters back, even his own teammates during batting practice. His wiki page attributes the following quote to him; "I'd knock down my own grandmother if she dug in on me." Wynn pitched in four decades, making his debut in 1939 and not retiring until 1963. The idea of bringing him back for an inning the the 70's was floated, but never materialized.
Stats: 23 seasons, 7x All-Star, 1959 AL Cy-Young Winner, 300 wins, 244 loses, 3.54 ERA, 611 career starts(19th All-Time), 4,564 IP, 2,334 strike-outs (49th All-Time), 17 home runs as a batter
Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1972
