Lou Brissie is a name that sounded very familiar to me, but after looking at his stats and wiki page, I'm not sure why.  Which is not to diminish either page.  As a player, Brissie was an All-Star and played seven respectable seasons.  His wiki page is even more fleshed out.  Brissie saw "intense fighting" in Italy in 1944 and had his leg injured in an artillery barrage.  Doctor's told him it would have to be amputated, but he insisted they not due to his being a ball player, even though it put his life in jeopardy.  He came back from Europe with an impressive collection of medals.

After baseball, Brissie would serve as the National Director of American Legion Baseball (which may be where I know his name from) and on the President's Physical Fitness Counsel.
