I feel like there are an unusually large number of '52 Robin Roberts floating around out there. I probably bid on a dozen of them that I just missed on before finally landing this one. I think the chewed corner scared people away. Doesn't bother me much at all. Roberts now joins Doby, Mize, Slaughter, and Feller as the 5th Hall of Famer I've picked up from the '52 set.
After WWII Roberts attended Michigan State where he played basketball. It wasn't until after his junior year that he tried out for the baseball team as a pitcher, and only chose pitcher because the Spartans were short at the position. After making the team, Roberts played some summer ball in Vermont, was signed by the Phillies, and things worked out ok from there.
Stats: 19 seasons, 7x All-Star, 286 wins, 6 straight 20+ win seasons '50-55
Inducted into Baseball Hall of Fame in 1976
